Welcome to our show!
This show has been produced by the 2012 Organizational Sustainability class.
First, we would like to ask you a few questions:
- What is sustainability?
- What is organizational sustainability?
Next...
Next, we experimented in class with some tools that could assist us in navigating through real-life, real-complex situations in our action-research project.
Here is an example of a rich picture:

Then...
Then, we moved into our action-research project. What is an action-research? Action-research is a process, usually used in sociological studies, in which a researcher purposefully invades a real life situation to see what kind of change their intervention produces.
Confused? So were we!
Confused? So were we!
After that...
After that, we headed out into the real world to explore the Picasso Organization and the Rivera Organization. We documented our progress through the River of Life.
In conclusion...
In conclusion, there may not be a formula for organizational sustainability, but throughout the course of this project we've found consistent sustainability themes that organizations should keep in mind:
- Nate: Sustainability involves evaluating purpose and relevance, not just survival.
- Mercy: Sustainability is creating a framework that ties actions together through purpose.
- Willow: Organizational sustainability is the golden thread that weaves all actors and aspects of an organization together, whether its presence is quiet or loud depends on the situation and the component of the organization that is being examined, but it is ever present as a goal or concern in the mission, the vision, the programs, the staff, the participants and most importnatly the impact of any organization
- Stephanie: Sustainability is a never ending path filled with discovery and disappointment.
- Juanita: It's a living, breathing organism: not to be compartmentalized; encompassing every aspect of an organization's life.
- Mizu: The secret of sustinability is more than the ability of managing the organization's finances. It is a process that starts with having a solid identity, which is developed by having a solid mission.
- Alyson: Sustainability is understanding where you are and knowing where you want to be.
